About this photo and about Todd:

After meeting Todd in 1982, I was soon working as his assistant on commercial gigs. When there was down time, together we photographed on the streets of Manhattan. Often, we roamed the 40s and 50s between Park and Fifth.

Back then, a driver (usually a man behind the wheel) could pull over at the curb and drop someone off or pick someone up. If there was waiting time involved, the driver might fall asleep. Amazingly, this would happen in the middle of Manhattan.

Short bio:

I began photographing in 1973 while pursuing a degree in Art History.  In 1977, I moved to NYC, taking classes with Lisette Model and Julio Mitchel. After 3 years of working in the archive of Magnum Photos, I started freelancing as an assistant. I spent most of the 80s working for several photographers including Todd while looking for my own assignments.

Todd’s passion for photography was contagious. His insistence on keeping one’s personal work at the forefront greatly influenced my search for an individual style.

In the 90’s I moved to Amsterdam and joined Kahmann Gallery in 2006.  Since then, I have exhibited in Amsterdam, Basel, Tokyo and Istanbul.

About influence:

Influence is essential. If Robert Frank wasn’t influenced by Walker Evans, we wouldn’t have The Americans.
