On influence:

I wasn't born in New York but I feel like I grew up in New York. I became an artist in New York because I was surrounded by artists. Every day just walking down the street, riding the subway and talking to people. I've lived here for 29 years and I'm still inspired. I can definitely say without a doubt that New York has influenced and shaped me as a photographer. But it was really my friends who influenced me the most.  Maybe it was the 'we're all in this together' mind set that cemented those early friendships. Side by side we watched vintage films at local theaters for hours, shared books and vacuum cleaners, photography, painting and poetry.  We learned from each other, collaborating and experimenting with art projects on roof tops, community gardens, railroad apartments that were too small and too dark, storefronts and dive bars. We figured out that what we needed most to survive all this craziness was each other.
